Following a week-long ordeal for 41 men trapped inside the collapsed Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand, rescue operations faced a temporary halt as authorities prepared for the next phase.

The initial drilling operation from the tunnel entrance faced technical challenges with a large American auger machine, prompting a shift to alternative approaches.

Authorities are now focusing on creating two new tunnels — one drilled horizontally from the right and left sides of the main tunnel and another drilled vertically from the top, reported NDTV.

The vertical shaft aims to serve as an alternative route for reaching those trapped inside.

Logistical challenges led to the abandonment of the initial plan to airlift heavy machinery, necessitating the construction of a ramp to transport the necessary equipment to the summit.

The hilly terrain poses a significant challenge, requiring time-consuming efforts to establish motorable roads.

Family members of the trapped workers are being accommodated in tents near the tunnel entrance, with the Uttarakhand government pledging to cover their travel, food, and lodging expenses.

The ongoing efforts involve a broader coalition, including personnel from ITBP, NDRF, and political representatives from various parties, highlighting the collective commitment to the challenging rescue mission.
