In a significant boost to the Indian mobile phone manufacturing industry, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has resulted in the creation of 500,000 incremental jobs.

During a visit to Dixon Technologies’ manufacturing facility in Noida, Vaishnaw highlighted the success of the scheme, emphasising that 99.2 per cent of mobile phones used in India are now manufactured within the country.

Dixon Technologies’ subsidiary, Padget Electronics, has recently invested Rs 256 crore in its Noida facility, which boasts an annual production capacity of 25 million units.

As per reports by Hindustan Times, this investment aims to manufacture smartphones and related products for Xiaomi.

Additionally, Dixon is in the process of establishing another manufacturing facility with an annual capacity of 50 million units, exploring product categories beyond smartphones, including IT hardware.

Under the PLI 2.0, Padget Electronics received approval to manufacture and assemble computer hardware, further diversifying its production capabilities. This move aligns with the government’s efforts to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports.

Vaishnaw underscored the positive impact of the PLI scheme on job creation, revealing a monthly net employment opportunity creation of almost 1.4 million in the country.

He highlighted the increasing domestic value addition in mobile component manufacturing, reaching as high as 60 per cent.
