The ICC World Cup 2023 clash between India and New Zealand on Saturday broke all viewership records on OTT and live streaming.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah revealed that the thrilling match in Dharamsala garnered 4.3 crore views on Disney+ Hotstar, beating the previous record of 3.5 crore concurrent views set by the India vs Pakistan earlier in this World Cup.
Breaking all records
“We want to thank our users who flocked to Disney+ Hotstar for the thrilling game between India vs New Zealand and helped us reset the world record for concurrent viewers for a live streaming event.
“We served 4.3 crore concurrent viewers (43 Million) at its peak during the match – a historical high and easily surpassed the 3.5 crore number (35 Million) previously set for the India vs Pakistan match in the same tournament,” said Sajith Sivanandan, Head of Disney+ Hotstar India.
“As the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 enters its business end and as it grabs the attention of India increasingly, we will continue to strive towards bringing these memorable moments to our users’ screens,” he added.
Kohli, Shami shine in thrilling Indian win
The record was broken mainly due to the quality of the contest as New Zealand ran India close but couldn’t stop the Men in Blue from registering their fifth win in succession.
Chasing a challenging 274 for victory, India rode on brilliant batting shows from Virat Kohli (95) and captain Rohit Sharma (46) to overhaul the target with 2 overs to spare.
The Blackcaps had been bowled out for 273 in 50 overs after Daryl Mitchell’s career-best 130 and Rachin Ravindra’s knock of 75. Mohammed Shami bagged his second ODI World Cup five-wicket haul to set a new Indian record in the tournament.
Table-toppers India will next face defending champions England in Lucknow on October 29.
