Reacting strongly to stand-up comedian Vidushi Swaroop’s set on prostitution, Delhi Commission for Women Chairdperson Swati Maliwal said the jokes showed the “shallowness” the comedian’s mind. Swaroop, in a snippet from her comedy performance, said that prostitution as a “cool profession.”
“The trend of considering oneself cool by spouting nonsense under the guise of stand-up comedy has been on the rise. This woman probably does not understand, or perhaps she is ignoring, how a girl is forced into prostitution, the compulsions she faces, and the pain she endures. Making tasteless jokes about the suffering of others exposes the shallowness of the mind,” Maliwal in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Swaroop’s video goes viral
Maliwal’s reaction came after a snippet of Swaroop’s video on prostitution went viral. In the video, the stand-up comedian can be heard saying that she finds prostitution to be a “cool profession”.
“There is no discrimination regarding experience in prostitution. … In fact, they want freshers. … Prostitution is the only business where interns earn more than CEOs,” Swaroop said during her performance.
While the video of Swaroop’s comedy set was released about two months back, the snippet has gone viral recently on social media.
“This is not only absurd but also inhuman and cruel. This insensitive joke is just a glimpse of today’s so-called stand-up performances. It is fortunate that no male comedian performed these jokes; otherwise, it would have raised concerns with authorities. Shame on those who found it laughable,” Vishwas said.
Video crosses 400,000 views on YouTube
Video was released on August 13 this year on YouTube and crossed 400,000 views on the video-sharing platform. Several internet users commented on her video, stating that this is a prime example of dark comedy, and she might be addressing the childhood traumas of some people.
