In a significant declaration at the ET Now Global Business Summit 2024, Home Minister Amit Shah has announced the notification of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Shah reiterated his stance on the enforcement of the CAA, emphasizing that no obstacle could impede its implementation.

The legislation seeks to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted minorities—Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians—from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India on or before 31 December 2014.

The recent announcement adds to the earlier reports which mentiomed that the Rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019 will be notified “much before” the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, as reported a senior government functionary on 2 January.

It’s also important to note that for over two years after passing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the government had sought repeated multiple extensions for framing CAA rules.

Mired in controversy, recently Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin had stated that he will not allow “Citizenship (Amendment) Act to set foot in Tamil Nadu”, while, Edappadi K Palaniswami, the general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), said that his party would staunchly oppose any repercussions of the CAA on minorities.
