South actor Vijay Sethupathi is now one of the most loved stars in the Indian film industry. The actor received a heartwarming response from the audience for his recent performance in Jawan opposite Shah Rukh Khan. He has now become one of the most sought-after actors in Bollywood as well as in the South.

Amidst the glitter and glamour, the grim side of stardom raised its menacing head three years ago when a Sri Lankan individual, whose identity remains shrouded in mystery, unleashed a vile threat against the beloved Indian actor’s young daughter. Scroll down to know more.

Back in 2020, the Cyber Cell of the Chennai Police initiated a case in response to a r*pe threat made on Twitter against the daughter of Vijay Sethupathi. This threat emerged shortly after the actor’s decision to step away from 800, a biopic featuring Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan, due to mounting opposition.

Without explicitly mentioning Mr. Sethupathi’s identity or divulging specifics regarding the threat, Chennai Police Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal tweeted: “There has been a lot of concern on social media regarding comments made against a celebrity. On receipt of a complaint to this effect, a case has been registered.”

As reported by Quint, Twitter issued a graphic threat tagging Mr Sethupathi’s own handle. Calling the actor a betrayer of Tamils, the tweet said: “Only this (s*xual assault) would make him learn about the hardship faced by Lankan Tamils.” This appalling message jolted the entertainment industry & left netizens speechless, raising profound concerns about the safety of celebrity families at that time

One week following the incident, the Twitter user who had been booked by the Chennai police for making r*pe threats against the actor’s minor daughter has released a video apology, with their identity concealed for protection. In a video message shared on IBC Tamil, a Sri Lankan news outlet, the individual attributed his reprehensible actions to losing his job during the pandemic and expressed his anger at the actor for his involvement in the contentious biopic centered on Sri Lankan cricketer Muthiah Muralidaran.

Face blurred in the video, the man said, “I’ve never spoken like this in my entire life. The reason behind this was I lost my job due to coronavirus, and I was angry at Vijay Sethupathi, like other Sri Lankan Tamils, because he was acting in that movie. I will not repeat this.”

Vijay Sethupathi, renowned for his versatile acting and impeccable skills, had not responded publicly to this grievous threat. However, his ardent fans and colleagues from the cinematic world had rallied around him, extending unwavering support during these trying times.

This is not the first time a celebrity’s daughter has received bestial threats. Previously, cricketer MS Dhoni‘s daughter was similarly threatened after her father – who plays for the Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing IPL – lost a match.

Vijay Sethupathi’s minor daughter recieving r*pe threats had once laid bare the murky side of the entertainment industry, where celebrities and their families are often targets of malicious intent. The repercussions of this threat have resonated far and wide, spurring a collective demand for stricter cyberbullying legislation and heightened security measures to safeguard celebrities and their loved ones.
